The question has changed shape, and most articles have not caught up. The Toniebox 1 is no longer a purchasable option. tonies' own UK page lists it as Toniebox 1 Legacy with availability reading No longer available, and it does not appear on the US homepage at all.
tonies' current official comparison is not Toniebox 2 against Toniebox 1. It is Toniebox 2 against the Toniebox Lite, a new cheaper third model at $79.99 that launched in North America in August 2026.
So if you are a Toniebox 1 owner wondering whether to upgrade, the real choice is a $79.99 Lite or a $149.99 Toniebox 2. And if you are new to the platform, Toniebox 1 is not on the table regardless. Here is what the money actually buys, and the two things that got worse rather than better.
Quick verdict
| Upgrade if | You want Tonieplay, the light ring, the sleep timer, sunrise alarm and bedtime mode, or your child is under 3 |
| Do not upgrade if | Your Toniebox 1 works and your child uses wired headphones. The jack is gone on the Toniebox 2 |
| Cheapest route onto the current platform | Toniebox Lite at $79.99, not the Toniebox 2 at $149.99 |
| The hidden cost | A $9.99 USB-C to AUX adapter if you want wired headphones back |
| Trade-in? | tonies does not advertise one. You get nothing for the old box |
| Your Tonies | All of them work, but each one has to be placed on the new box once, on WiFi, to download |
What actually changed
tonies' own comparison table, which is the reliable starting point.
| Feature | Toniebox 1 | Toniebox 2 |
| Storage | 8 GB | 32 GB |
| Charging | Charging station | USB-C |
| Dynamic light ring | No | Yes |
| Age rating | 3 and over | 1 and over |
| Tonieplay compatible | No | Yes |
| Sleep timer with light | No | Yes |
| Sunrise alarm | No | Yes |
| Bedtime mode | No | Yes |
| Battery status in app | No | Yes |
| Syncing | Manual | Automatic, around 30 seconds after power-on |
| Headphone jack | Yes, 3.5mm | No |
| Published battery runtime | 7 hours | Not published |
That last pair of rows is where this review diverges from most. Both are genuine regressions and neither gets much coverage.
The headphone jack is gone, and this is the big one

tonies removed the 3.5mm headphone jack from the Toniebox 2. Its own support article says it plainly: Toniebox 2 is built with the latest USB-C port instead of a headphone jack. And it confirms old tonies headphones will not plug straight in.
The Toniebox 1 had a headphone jack listed in its connections spec on tonies' own page. Retailer spec sheets for the Toniebox 2 list USB-C as its only port.
What you can do about it
tonies sells a USB-C to AUX adapter at $9.99 USD, in stock, to connect wired headphones to a Toniebox 2. The support article also says new accessories are coming along with software updates that will add headphone connectivity, though it does not say when or what that would change given the jack is physically absent.
One contradiction worth handling carefully. tonies' comparison chart says the Toniebox 2 and the Lite support both wired and Bluetooth headphones. That is true only with the $9.99 adapter. The support article and the existence of the adapter are more specific and more recent evidence. Read supports wired as supports wired with a separately sold dongle.
If your child is used to wired headphones in the car or on a plane, factor the adapter and the fact that it is another small thing to lose.
The battery figure disappeared
tonies published 7 hours runtime for the Toniebox 1, on its own spec page, for a NiMH battery.
For the Toniebox 2 it publishes no hours figure at all. We checked the tonies UK hub, which says long lasting battery, the US product page, which says hours of songs, stories and fun, and two major retailers' spec sheets. Nothing official anywhere.
What tonies does publish for the Toniebox 2: 10 minutes of charging gives up to 45 minutes of playtime, and a full charge takes at least 3 hours.
A 10-hour figure circulates and traces to a single parenting publication, which reports up to 10 hours continuous play against about 7 hours for the original, and states it did not run a real-world test. Treat it as a reviewer's claim rather than a spec.
The chemistry did change, from NiMH with a charging station to lithium-ion with USB-C, and the Toniebox 2 adds a low-battery alert and auto power-off. So it is plausible the runtime improved. tonies just will not say by how much.
Tonieplay, the one genuinely new capability
Everything else on the comparison list is a convenience upgrade. Tonieplay is the only thing a Toniebox 1 cannot do at any price.
tonies describes it as a board-game-like, screen-free interactive layer over audio. Four parts work together:
- The Toniebox 2's light ring, which is why it does not work on a Toniebox 1
- A Tonieplay Disc placed on the box to unlock a specific story or game
- The Tonieplay controller, placed on top, so kids make choices, answer questions and work through challenges
- Bonus accessories with some games
The positioning matters for the upgrade decision. tonies bills it as an extended age range, fun for kids up to 9 and over, with strategic challenges and decision-driven stories aimed at older children. So the Toniebox 2 is simultaneously a 1+ box and a box that reaches 9+, where the Toniebox 1 was 3+ and stayed there.
Costs on top of the box: Tonieplay games $19.99 to $24.99, the controller $14.99, Tonieplay Sets from $34.99. It is an open-ended extra spend, not a one-off.
The honest framing: if your child is 6 or older and starting to drift from the Toniebox, Tonieplay is a real argument for the upgrade. If they are 2 and the box is used for bedtime stories, it is not.
The third option nobody expected: Toniebox Lite
Announced for North America in July 2026, first deliveries and Walmart in-store from 22 August, with the UK, Ireland, Australia and New Zealand following in autumn 2026.
| Toniebox Lite | |
| Price | $79.99 USD / $99.99 CAD |
| Age | 1 and over |
| Tonies | Works with all of them |
| Size | Smaller and lighter than the Toniebox 2 |
| Battery | 4 Ah lithium iron phosphate. No runtime figure published |
| Light ring | No |
| App controls | Parents control playback, set volume limits and access digital content, as with Toniebox 2 |
What the Lite appears to lack: tonies' launch release attributes Tonieplay, the dynamic light ring, the sleep timer, the sunrise alarm and bedtime mode to the Toniebox 2 only, which implies the Lite does not have them without ever saying so directly. tonies has not published a full Lite spec, so treat that as inference rather than confirmed.
What this does to the decision: the real US choice is now a $79.99 Lite against a $149.99 Toniebox 2, a gap of about $70. What that $70 buys is Tonieplay compatibility, the light ring, the sleep timer with light, the sunrise alarm and bedtime mode. If none of those matter to you, the Lite is the cheaper way onto the current platform and it plays every Tonie you already own.
What tonies does not publish about either box

Three gaps worth knowing, because reviews often fill them with guesses.
Audio quality
No speaker spec, driver size, wattage or volume figure for either box, on tonies' US or UK sites or on retailer spec sheets. Retailers list only audio system type and voice guidance.
One parenting publication reports the Toniebox 2 speaker got an upgrade with a fuller-range sound and a higher maximum volume than the original, explicitly with no measured comparison. That is a reviewer impression, not a published spec, and we are labelling it as such.
Water resistance
No IP rating is published for any Toniebox. Not for the 1, not for the 2, not for the Lite. tonies publishes no water-resistance claim at all.
What it does publish for the Toniebox 2: a PVC and cotton blend fabric, flexible silicone ears, a polycarbonate platform and an ABS frame, with wipeable fabric and a build intended to handle drops and tumbles.
Wipeable and shock-resistant are not water resistance. For contrast, Yoto publishes an explicit IP67 rating for its Mini 4th Gen. If spill-proofing matters, that difference is real.
A note on subscriptions
The Toniebox needs no subscription to work, which remains one of the platform's better features. But tonies' US site does now promote Save with Subscriptions for Tonie content and figures, so the accurate statement is that the box requires no subscription, not that tonies sells none.
Moving your collection across
Every existing Tonie works with the Toniebox 2. But there is a step people underestimate.
tonies' own upgrade article: your collection will need to be downloaded to the new box before you can play them. You place each Tonie on the new box while it is connected to WiFi to trigger its download. After that first download, they work offline.
Which means the real process is: get the new box on WiFi, then physically place every single Tonie on it, one at a time, and wait. For a collection of thirty figures that is a genuine evening's job rather than a formality.
What tonies does not document: Creative Tonie content migration, the Household and account transfer steps, and whether a Toniebox 1 and a Toniebox 2 can sit in the same Household at once. The upgrade article covers none of it.
Creative Tonie audio lives in your tonies cloud account rather than on the box, so it most likely follows the account across. We could not verify that, so we are not going to state it as fact. If you have hours of recorded family audio on Creative Tonies, ask tonies support before you hand the old box on.
One related thing we do know: a Toniebox belongs to one Household at a time. If you sell or give away the Toniebox 1, factory reset it and remove it from your household, or the next owner hits an already in another Household error.
There is no trade-in
We looked. There is no trade-in programme, no upgrade discount and no owner-loyalty bundle anywhere on tonies' own sites or in its upgrade article. The only offer on the upgrade page is a generic 10% off your first order email signup, untied to upgrading and US residents only.
So the position a Toniebox 1 owner is actually in: your box is officially Legacy and no longer available, you get nothing for it, you pay full price for the replacement, and the replacement has no headphone jack. That is the honest counterweight to the upgrade pitch, and it is worth sitting with before you spend $149.99.
Searches for trade-in surfaced only third-party resale services, not anything from tonies.
What the Toniebox 1 still does better
Almost no review covers this, so here it is in one place.
1. It has a built-in 3.5mm headphone jack. The Toniebox 2 needs a $9.99 adapter
2. It has a published battery runtime of 7 hours. The Toniebox 2 has no published figure at all
3. It cost about $100 against the Toniebox 2's $140 to $160, when it was available
4. The charging cradle arguably suited a child charging it themselves better than a cable. tonies ships a deliberately short USB-C cable with the Toniebox 2, which it describes as short for child safety on 1+ listeners. The cable length is confirmed by tonies, the judgement about which is better for kids is ours
5. No ongoing add-on pressure. Tonieplay discs, controller and accessories are each separate purchases that did not exist in the Toniebox 1 world
Portability criticism applies to both, though. The large figurines are the point of the product and also what makes it cumbersome to travel with compared to card-based players.

So should you upgrade?

Yes, if
- Your child is under 3. The Toniebox 2 is rated 1+ where the Toniebox 1 was 3+, and My First Tonies exist for that age
- Your child is 6 or older and losing interest. Tonieplay is genuinely aimed at up to 9+ and is the only thing the Toniebox 1 cannot do
- You want the bedtime features. Sleep timer with light, sunrise alarm and bedtime mode are all new and all practical
- Your Toniebox 1 has actually failed. In that case the question is Lite or 2, not whether to replace
- 8 GB has become a real constraint on a large collection
No, if
- Your child uses wired headphones regularly. You are paying more for a box that removed the jack
- Your Toniebox 1 works fine and your child is 3 to 5. Almost nothing on the upgrade list applies to you
- You were hoping for a trade-in. There is not one
- Battery life is your reason. tonies publishes no figure for the Toniebox 2, so you are upgrading on a claim nobody has substantiated
- You want water resistance. No Toniebox has a published IP rating
Consider the Lite instead, if
- You want a second box for another room or another child, and do not need Tonieplay or the light ring
- Your Toniebox 1 died and you want the cheapest route back onto a current box. $79.99 against $149.99 is a meaningful gap
Just note that tonies has not published a full Lite spec, so what it lacks is implied rather than confirmed. Check the comparison page before you buy if the sleep timer or bedtime mode matters to you.
FAQ
Is the Toniebox 1 still sold?
No. tonies' own UK page lists it as Toniebox 1 Legacy with availability showing No longer available, and it does not appear on the US homepage. tonies' current comparison is Toniebox 2 against the new Toniebox Lite.
Does the Toniebox 2 have a headphone jack?
No. tonies removed it. Its support article states the Toniebox 2 is built with a USB-C port instead of a headphone jack, and old tonies headphones will not plug straight in. tonies sells a USB-C to AUX adapter at $9.99 to connect wired headphones.
Do my old Tonies work on a Toniebox 2?
Yes, all of them. But each one has to be placed on the new box once, while it is connected to WiFi, to download. After that they play offline as normal.
How long does the Toniebox 2 battery last?
tonies does not publish an hours figure. It published 7 hours for the Toniebox 1 but only says long lasting for the Toniebox 2, along with 10 minutes of charging giving up to 45 minutes of playtime and a full charge taking at least 3 hours. A 10-hour figure circulating online comes from a single untested review.
Is there a trade-in for my old Toniebox?
tonies does not advertise one. There is no trade-in programme, upgrade discount or owner-loyalty bundle on its sites, only a generic 10% off first order email signup.
What is Tonieplay and do I need a Toniebox 2 for it?
It is a screen-free interactive game layer using discs and a controller placed on the box, aimed at kids up to 9 and over. It needs the Toniebox 2's light ring, so it does not work on a Toniebox 1 and appears not to work on the Lite either.
Is a Toniebox waterproof?
No Toniebox has a published IP rating. tonies describes the Toniebox 2 fabric as wipeable and the build as able to handle drops and tumbles, but makes no water-resistance claim for any model.
Bottom line
The Toniebox 2 is a better box than the Toniebox 1 on most measures: four times the storage, USB-C, a light ring, a 1+ age rating, bedtime features, automatic syncing, and Tonieplay, which is the only genuinely new capability rather than a convenience.
But the upgrade costs more than the sticker price suggests. You pay around $149.99, you get nothing for your old box, the headphone jack is gone and costs $9.99 to get back, and you spend an evening placing every Tonie you own on the new box to re-download it.
And the comparison has moved. Toniebox 1 is Legacy and unbuyable, so the real question for most people is now a $79.99 Lite against a $149.99 Toniebox 2. That $70 buys Tonieplay, the light ring and the bedtime features, and nothing else we can confirm.
Our read: if your Toniebox 1 works and your child is between 3 and 5, keep it. If they are under 3 or over 6, the Toniebox 2 has something real to offer them. And if you just need another box in the house, look at the Lite before you default to the expensive one.
